What recipes do you think are basic for a girl's collection of recipes ... or a boy, if he likes to cook?

A friend of mine told me that when she was 9, her mother started her out with a recipe for a vanilla cake, and one for a chocolate cake .. and then they worked on frostings and fillings ... etc.

The first good and basic things I learned to make when I was young and cooking with my mom or grandma were:

mashed potatoes
baked chicken
chicken soup
meatballs
pasta sauce
apple crisp
