Ok my art teacher wants me to do a drawing in all ebony pencil but I cant figure out how to make the water?
Any suggestions?? I have started over like 4 times because I cant figure out how to make the water realistic (btw im only 12 so I am not that advanced)
The most important aspect to drawing and painting is not the techniques involved in drawing or painting ... it is observation.
I suggest that you image Google words like lake, streeam, ocean, water. boats, etc. Also look up French Impressionist painter Monet. He was great with water and waterlillies. I have learned lots from Monet because did not paint things, he painted an impression of the things. My choice would be for you to paint an impression of water. Something that makes the eye of the viewer get the impression that the object in your drawing is water.
Think about this. There really are only three types of water pictures. 1.) Water from above, lakes, streams, etc. 2.) Looking through water like in a glass of water. 3.) Water from inside the water as in an underwater picture of the ocean and fish.
#1 The water is acting like a mirror, sometimes smooth, sometimes rippled. Sometimes you can draw "water" simply by leaving an area blank and then adding a relection of what ever is on the other side of the water (like a mountain) - the more accurate the reflection is, the smoother the water must be, and vice versa.
#2 Water in a glass is invisible except for maybe bubbles. A straw in the glass of water appears to bend because of refraction - the bending of the light waves.
#3 Underwater water is usually a blue/green color but it is the areas of light and shadows on the things underwater that make it believable. Did you go swimming this summer? Do you remember what the flashes of light on the bottom of the pool looked like?
And one final thing ... sometimes it is not what you draw or paint, it is what you DO NOT draw or paint. One term for this is negative space. Back to #2... if I draw a couple of fish and seven bubbles your brain knows the fish are in water even though you don't have any water in your picture.
