How can you soften a rock/stone?
I've been trying to make a figurine out of a rock I found. It's fairly small, about three inches long, an inch wide. I'm not a totally impatient person, but I believe it would be easier to shape it if it were softer. (I'm using sandpaper) Is there any way to soften the stone? Maybe there's something you can soak it in, a chemical, water, anything? Any help is appreciated! 
True...there is no way to soften stone! As suggested...get a drummel tool at home depot or lowes and get one of the grinding bits...some of them are kits that already have various grinding bits in them! Work in a small area at a time and you will be able to carve the stone faster than Micheal Angelo! Whether it will come out to be as good has yet to be seen!

Finish the stone by sanding it with medium grit and work your way to a finer grit dipping the work in water every so often! This will make it polished!
