How can I make my carousel horse go up and down?

I wanted to make a homemade amusement ride as a birthday present for someone's birthday. Is there a way to make a carousel horse go up and down without actually making it go round?

Yes, you can make a carousel horse go up and down without actually making it go round.

What you need to do is build a crankshaft, similar to a lawn mower engine crankshaft.

You need to determine how much up/ down travel you want.
If you want 6 inches of movement, the crank throw would be 3 inches.

Whatever you decide, the throw will be 1/2 of the total movement required.

This will involve some welding, 2 pillow block bearings, the rod connected to the pipe the horse is mounted on will need to be fabricated at a machine shop.

Another option for the rod is to go to a car junk yard and get a rod out of a dead engine and use that.

You will need either a electric motor, gas engine or a hand crank and a gear box.

Not knowing you expertise level, friends with welders, access to a machine shop and the dollars you are willing to spend, I will stop here.
