tips on feeding two 18day old zebra finch?
one of the babies started to fly this morning. but the parents kept chasing and pecking at him or her. i took the baby out because for safety reasons from the parents. he is in a separate cage by himself with a heat lamp, water in a small bowl with marbles in it so he wouldn't drown, some seeds and soft chopped boiled eggs in a food tray. I have Kay tee baby food for the bird and 1cc strange to feed him. (i kept this just in case something like this would happen). i tried to feed him but he wouldn't eat. he has been out of the main cage for about an hour. how long should i wait until i try to feed him again. any tips on how to feed him or get him to eat? also should i take the other baby out?
I would recommend putting the father finch in that separate cage by himself and move back the baby finch so that the mommy can feed both finches for you, on her own. Most likely, its the father finch that is chasing the baby finch since it is taking time away for him to be with mommy finch. Basically, he jealous of the babies getting all the attention from the mommy finch, so he is trying to peck them to death so that it will be only him and the mommy once again.
Trust me, I seen this happened before with my parakeets whenever they have babies. I usually have to put the father parakeet in another cage to prevent this type of stuff with my babies parakeets. Hope this works out for you.
