Antique knife-rests question?
My daughter bought a pair of silver antique knife rests today, and because we can't date them as yet, I wondered if people still use these items, or if we could assume that they were of a certain age simple because of what they are. Does anyone one know please?
No they are not used now. These were used in Georgian and Victorian times when large families sat down to a huge roast joint. The father would ceremoniously carve the joint and rest the large carving knife and fork on the rests to avoid soiling the white linen tablecloth. I have just finished watching an 'Antiques Roadshow' in which one of the silver experts was talking about his own collection of knife rests. He said that buying one of these as a young man working as a porter in an auction house had started his love of silver.He mentioned that while, when he was a young man he could buy these for a fiver he now would have to pay£300-£400 pounds for a pair and so only bought them once or twice a year.Certainly check the hallmarks which will have a date letter for when these were made. There should also be a lion or a leopard head as silver was assayed in Edinburgh and Birmingham as well as London.
