Toilet making scary musical sounds-no i am not kidding!?
my upstairs toilet will not allow itself to be flushed and for a good amount of time in made 'running' sounds though no water was ever flowing out (thankfully!) now though i am getting quite worried as the sounds have gotten worse and louder, all this just by leaving it alone (as i am not sure what to do to fix my initial predicament so i did not auger anything under the porcelain hood of the toilet's top) . The sound the toilet is making can be best related to the sound a maraca makes when shaken. (sorry for that off-kilter comparison of mine but it's the closest thing i could think of the sound being akin to! ) So, anyhow-- what should i do to try to hush my toilet back to the way it was before all this grumbling? Many thanks friend for any constructive advice you can give me :O)
also, just so you know, i couldn't find any chain at all under the top of my toilet's porcelin hood like usually there is
It sounds like the fill valve is sick. Replacement kits are widely available from home or hardware stores for the entire fill assembly. To put them in:
Turn off the incoming water at the valve underneath by the wall.
Empty the toilet by flushing it.
Remove the old valve assembly using appropriate wrenches.
Install the new one.
Turn on the water and check for leaks.
Adjust the float for a proper tank water level. It should be about an inch below the overflow tube.
Use the toilet with the pride that you fixed it.
