Isn't the human eye connected directly to the brain?
I remember videos of cheap anatomy in sixth/seventh grade, translucent bodies, and how the eyeball is connected directly to the brain by a "cord" in the back.
...but the human skull has a "plate" of bone behind the back of the eye (the eye sockets) that would obstruct the cord connection to the brain. So is the eye connected directly to the brain, or something? Can someone paste some pictures?
This is what I'm talking about by cord obstruction: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/adam/images/en/skull-anatomy-picture.jpg
Yes. The optic nerve connects the eye to the brain. There is an opening in the bone called the optic foramen through which the nerve passes.
